CRIJ 2313 - Corrections


 This course is an introduction to the history, court processes, prison alternatives, correctional systems and functions of the American correctional institution.  Within the curriculum correctional ideologies, historical influences, and societal changes are studied and analyzed as to their impact on the correctional system.   Alternatives to prison, such as jails and detention facilities, probation, diversion and intermediate sanctions are thoroughly examined and discussed.  Thorough examination as to the root causes of criminal behavior are examined with specific focus on gang structure, gang operations, and gang origins as found within the confines of local, state and federal detention and correctional facilities.  Emphasis on imprisonment, the effects of prisonization, and social behavior as a result of long-term incarceration is examined, deconstructed and discussed.  Detail analysis of the institutional clients (female, male, juveniles and special category offenders such as the criminally insane, geriatric inmates and HIV-Positive inmates) are thoroughly discussed and reviewed.  Practical exercises include the student conducting special research on a specific gang or other institutionalized offenders.  The impact of illegal immigration and foreign drug cartels on American detention and correctional institutions is studied along with the current political influences that drive or mitigate strategies and practices.  Special studies include prison riots such as the Attica and Santa Fe.  Inmate and ex-offender rights are brought to light along with a detail examination of the pros and cons of the death penalty, parole and probation.  Throughout the course curriculum ongoing discussions/analyses are conducted in regards to past and present laws passed that have directly impacted on the American prison population.    This class is a concentration requirement for criminal justice students.
