ARBC 1806 - Accelerated Beginning Arabic

Accelerated Beginning Arabic is the first year Arabic language course for students who have no background in Arabic and covers all of the material for first-year Arabic in one semester. This course fulfills the Humanities graduation requirement. Beginning Arabic introduces the Arabic alphabet and the study of basic vocabulary and grammar topics. Students are expected to begin developing communicative competency in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary units cover words used to describe everyday surroundings and actions. Grammar topics include non-verbal sentences, present and past tense verbs, beginning Arabic sentence structure, including noun-adjective agreement and the idaafa structure. Students should be able to communicate at a beginning level using the basic vocabulary and grammar covered in class and should be able to understand and produce short paragraph-length passages. Cultural topics include the names, locations and flags of Arabic-speaking countries as well as cultural norms involving vocabulary such as greetings, clothing items and holidays. Additionally, students will gain insight into the language-learning process and the importance of possessing accurate cultural background information about the native speakers of other languages.

There are no prerequisites for this course. Students with prior Arabic knowledge or experience should consult with the instructor for proper placement.
